Bases on Okinawa 沖縄の基地

When we were making the film Under the Same Sun we felt we jave to introduce the current social problems  of the regions that are introduced in the movie. In the film, we touched upon the subject of American military bases in Okinawa very briefly, but we did a lot of research and interviews on the subject and I would like to share some more footage we have.
The base problem is a very delicate one on the island. I have a lot of American military friends, good people. But I also have a lot of local friends and I do see the difference in the housing, life style and standards between the two groups and feel the unbalance.
In terms of living together, the biggest problem is still the language, I believe. Rarely do the members of either group speak the other's language on a level that would be enough for a worthwhile conversation.

Since I am blessed with a rather good knowledge of both languages, and I am a documentary maker, I feel my task is to introduce and to translate the thoughts of one group and hope it would promote better understanding.

同じ太陽のもとに映画を作った時、その地域の社会問題も映画の中で紹介することも一つの目標でした。沖縄の基地問題について映画で少しだけコメントが入られましたが、その背景には研究と現場撮影がたくさんあります。それの一部は今アップしました。
沖縄の基地問題は非常に複雑です。私は軍人の友達もいるし、沖縄の現地の友達もいます。皆いい人です。でも、両方のグループを見ると、、家生活レベルなどの違いが明らかです。

毎日生活を見ると、一番の問題は、今でも言語であると思います。日本人とアメリカ人がお互いの言語が意見をちゃんと伝えるような会話ができるレベルでなかなか話せません。
私は、英語も日本語もある程度喋れる人であり、ドキュメンタリーを作る人でもあります。それで、私の課題は状況を紹介する、通訳することだと思います。このために、今の映像を披露したいです。
