Fukugi 福木

Fukugi is a strong tree, very common in Okinawa. The name means "tree of good fortune". An Okinawan elder explained to me that in old times these trees meant a very good protection agains the strong winds of the typhoon. Whose house was surrounded by fukugi trees was lucky, because his home was spared from the devastation of the typhoons. Hence the name: tree of good fortune.

福木は沖縄でよく見える強い木です。昔は、お家の周りに福木をたくさん植えた人はラッキでした：台風が来たら、この強い木で家が守られました。それで、福木と言う名前がつけられたらしいです。

Today there are very few areas on the main island with old villages hidden among fukugi trees. One such area is Bise, just north from the famous Churaumi Aquarium. For anyone who would like to get a glimpse into old Okinawa or who likes to listen to the music of the wind among trees, I recommend a visit to the area.

今日は福木の中で隠れたお家の村が沖縄で少なくなっています。本部半島の備瀬は一番有名なところかもしれません。昔の沖縄の雰囲気を覗きたい人、

あるいは木漏れ日を眺めたり、風邪の音色を聞いたりするのが好きな人には絶対

おすすめします。

Fukugi has been very important in old times for textile dying too. However surprising it might be, beautiful bright yellow color can be obtained from the bark of the fukugi tree. We used fukugi to dye the bingata costumes for Under the Same Sun too.


福木は昔から紅型の染め物でも大切でした。びっくりするかもしれませんが、福木の皮は明るい黄色になります。「同じ大陽のもとに」の衣装も、福木の黄色で染めました。

Bingata's beauty lies in its vivid colours, so in order to learn where these colours come from I wanted to challenge myself and do it the old way: dye with fukugi bark. With the help of an adventurous bingata artist, Ishida Rei and with the support of Ishigaki Akiko and the Shiroma Bingata Studio it all became possible.

The process is long and difficult, but it is worth the hassle. Plus, as Hundertwasser says: "With ready made colours you cannot work well. They are manufactured by somebody else, they lose creativity."

紅型の魅力は明るい色の中でありますので、この色の由来を分かるために、昔のやり方で、福木の皮を使って染めることにしました。紅型の作家さんの友達、石田麗、そして、織物のアーティスト石垣明子と城間紅型工房のサポートがあったからこの複雑な作業を成功しました。

プロセスは長くて難しいですが、やって良かったです。その上、フンデルトヴァッサーの言葉によると：「既製品を使うときれいな仕事はできない。生産されたもので、創造力をなくしてしまいます。」

First, we met Ishigaki Akiko, who is a weaver in the remote island of Iriomote. She and her high quality works are well known and highly estimated all around Japan. She uses natural dyes. 

I will never forget what she said about weaving: "Weaving starts with planting a mulberry tree for the silkworms. Good work takes a lot of time and you have to be in harmony with the land". 

She gave us two boxfuls of fukugi tree bark to experiment with. She said they cut the bark of the tree while the tree is still alive - you have to be gentle and know how much and from where you can take the bark, and then the tree can recover and grow on. This way you don't need to cut out a tree in order to have materials for dyeing.

まず、石垣明子さんと出会いました。彼女は西表島で工房を持っている日本で有名な織物アーティストです。彼女によりますと：「織物は、カイコのため桑の木を植えることから始まります。いい仕事は時間がかかります。そして、土を理解して、尊敬しながら作らないと、いい作品にはなりません。」

明子さんから二箱の福木の皮をもらいました。彼女のやり方では、福木が生きたまま皮を向きます。全部ではなく、少しだけ向きます、そうすると、木は治って、生き続けます。木を殺さなくても染の材料が手に入れます。

The next step is to boil the tree bark for one whole day. Then the yellowish, rather ugly liquid should be filtered two or three times. The next day we applied it on the textile. We put on three layers of colour, but it was still no more than a dull ocre. Then we applied alum on the textile and it was a miracle: as the textile dried and the two materials mixed, the colour changed to a strong and bright yellow. 

Finally, we washed the textile in the sea (it was needed for other reasons, not for the yellow) and the colour got even brighter in the salty water. The picture above was taken right after the costume bathed in the sea.

Even now, every time I wear or I wash the costume, I notice some change in the colour. It looks like the natural dye is alive and (like us humans) changes according to its environment.

次のステップは、木の皮を一日湧かします。そして、この結果で出た怪しい色の液体を三回こします。次の日、布に三回色を塗ります。その段階でも、鈍い黄土にしかなりませんでした。その後、布にミョウバンを塗ると、きれいに発色します。

最後、衣装を海で水もとしました。そこでも海の塩水で色がまた強くて明るくなりました。

今でも、衣装を洗ったり着けたりすると、色が毎回違います。植物で作った色は生きている気がします。

Himene ヒメネ

Himene means song in Tahitian. There are several traditional styles, like the Himene Tarava or the Himene Ruau.
We have heard some interesting details about their history from Heremoana Maamaatuaiahutapu, the director of the House of Culture (Te Fare Tahiti Nui) in Papeete.

ヒメネはタヒチ語で歌の意味です。ヒメネタラワ、ヒメネルアウなど、様々な伝統的なスタイルがあります。
これについてタヒチの文化センター長から興味深い話を聞きました。（ビデオは英語）

We had the chance to participate in the celebration of Matari'i Ni'a in Papenoo. Matari'i Ni'a is the name of a constellation (Pleiades) and its appearance marks the beginning of the abundant season in Tahiti. The festivities start in Papenoo, with singing, dancing and a ceremony where the villagers bring their first harvest as an offering. Then they sit in a circle and drink kava, a Samoan intoxicant drink (similar to the Mate in South America), widely used in ceremonies in Polynesia.

Since the weather was rainy and the ceremony was held under the stars, he quality of the footage is not the best - where the pictures are not clear, please enjoy the music.

パペノオでマタリイニアという大事な行事に参加することができました。マタリイニアはプレイアデス星座のタヒチ語の名前です。この星座がタヒチの空で現れると、豊富の季節が来ます。これを祝う祭りは毎年パペノオで始まります。歌、踊りと初収穫を備える儀式が行います。村の人は皆で座ってカワというサモアのお茶を一緒に飲みます。

AVA ITI

We were lucky enough to go to the beautiful island of Moorea. It is only about 30 minutes by boat from Papeete, the Tahitian capital, but it is like a different world. Beautiful sea, white beaches, lush green mountains. A laid back island with unbelievable scenery.

タヒチの旅の時、美しいモーレア島に行くことができました。タヒチ島の首都、パペエテから船で30分だけですが、違う世界です。真青の海、白砂のビーチ、そして緑
であふれる山々。ゆっくりのペースの信じられないぐらい美しい景色の島です。

The first people we met in the port were drummers, practicing which of course was exciting for us! After listening to them for some time they asked if we want to play together, which we took as a great honour. Obviously our speed and skills was not much compared to theirs, but they were nice, welcoming and accomodating. We had lots of fun playing together with them, and it seemed they enjoyed the funny foreigners too.

着いたら、港ですぐドラムの練習にぶっつかりました。しばらく練習を聞いたりしたら、「一緒に叩かない？」と誘われました。やっぱり、私たちのスピドと技は彼達に比べるものではなかったですが。すごく優しくベルカムされました。一緒に叩くのはとても楽しかった。そして、ドラマー達も面白い外人と会うのは楽しんでたみたいです。

The Mamas

It all started with two lovely old Tahitian ladies, our hosts. Mama Erena, who was a dancer and Tanti Coucou, a singer. They had a hard time remembering our Hungarian names, so they decided to give us Tahitian names. One morning at the breakfast they told us they gave us the names and they sounded serious about it. I received the name Maire, meaning green fern, a plant they use very often to make costumes. Hunor's Tahitian name is Hirinaki. It means "someone you can lean on". It might be just a coincidence, but I was surprised that after such a short time they could give him such a fitting name. 

I was very touched by this simple gesture and I took our new names seriously. Why was it so important for me? First of all because I felt we got involved into an old, oral tradition. Second, because I love and respect the ladies. I love that every night they talk, sing, tell each other stories and laugh together in bed. They are lighthearted, happy and when I hear them talk and laugh they sound so young. 

On the last day before we left, Coucou, the singer brought her ukulele and sang us a few songs. With her flower behind her ear she looked lovely and you would never guess she just turned 82.

I am very happy i got to meet the Mamas and I take my name and her songs with me as presents from them...

Back from Tahiti ただいま

We are back from Tahiti for a week now, it has been a busy week because i had to start editing the many hours of footage we have to finish up our movie!

We had a very special time in Polynesia, we met wonderful people, great dancers and saw amazing places. We walked, swam, hitchhiked and sat on a boat a lot. We ate lots and lots of coconuts and we asked many questions :)

We have a lot of videos, and i suppose not everything that is worth publishing can fit into our 15 minute   video so i am planning to post some of our interesting, informative or funny short films on youtube and here, so stay with us for more ;)

ただ今〜タヒチ、行って来ました。一週間前沖縄に着きましたが、この一週間は編集で熱心になって、すごく急がしかった。山ほど映像を取りましたので、今月中はずっと編集です。

ポリネシアの滞在、すごく特別な経験でした。すばらしい人々と会ったり、刺激的な踊りを見たり、素敵な景色を見たりしました。歩き、泳ぎ、ヒッチハイク、船旅もたくさんしました。そして、ココナツを一杯食べました。

とてもたくさんのビデオを取りましたので、１５分のドキュメンタリーはいい映像を全部入れるのは無理です。それで、面白い、興味深いとおかしい映像をYouTubeとここにすこしづつアップするつもりです。楽しみにしててください。

Dance Movements 踊りの解釈

Only three days left and we are heading to Tahiti. The way this project is evolving is a miracle. I just stand and watch. Well, I do work, but i feel like a greater power is in motion here...

Anyways, i would like to write a few words about the "Rainbow Mountain" dance that is part of the project.
In Tahitian dancing, the hand movements are very important. Usually the hands tell the story while the continuous movement of the hips follow the rhythm. If you look at the dance and the lyrics carefully, you can see they unfold together.


タヒチに出発するまで三日間だけ。このプロジェクトが少しづつ発展しているのを見ると、感動します。もちろん、私も自分の仕事をちゃんとやりますが、このプロセスでは私より大きな存在が手入れしてくれている気がします〜

今日は、「虹の山」の踊りの解釈をシェアーしたいです。

タヒチの踊りで、手の動きがとても大切です。腰が止まらずに動いて、リズムを表します。そして、手がストリーを描いています。踊りと歌詞を詳しく見ると、同時に展開することに気づきます。

Since we have finished our campaign and bought our tickets to Tahiti (YES!!!!), we have been very busy preparing our trip and learning more about Tahiti. The last two weeks we spent in a huge traditional Japanese style house with 20 other people, Tahitians, Japanese, Hawaiians, in the forest (literally, because the name of the village we were staying is Yamanaka, which means 'in the mountains'). We were sharing life, music, dance, food and good times with Te Maire Raurii, a traditional band from Tahiti and the dancers of Tiare Heipua Japan. This "bootcamp" was organized by Heikapua, the leader of Tiare Heipua. She created a show, Myth of Japan, the old Japanese cosmology told in Tahitian dance and drumming and had three shows with live drummers this past weekend. 

We were very busy practicing and preparing, performing, and cooking, but in the meantime the drummers have been very kind and took their time to patiently teach us every day. We have learned some Tahitian language too and listened to their stories about the faraway islands. At the end of the trip we were given a beautiful toere drum and a professional drumstick as encouragement for further practice. 

Hunor and the Tahitian band even played some random music together, fusing Hungarian doromb (jawharp) with Tahitian toere drums. 

"See you next month in Tahiti!" sounded like a dream when we said goodbye. I can't wait to meet these open hearted, always positive, hard-working, lovely people again in their homeland.

We would like to thank our contributors again and again for supporting us in this dream! I will keep you updated on our work and as soon as we come back from Tahiti (8 December) I will start working on editing the final movie and making the orders you have placed: necklaces, quotes, postcards, textiles. キャンペーンが終わり、タヒチ行きのチケットを買いました（イエエイ）。それ以来、来月の旅の準備、そして、タヒチについて学ぶことで忙しかったです。二週間、石川県、山中にいました。あそこで、山と美しい森の中で大きな和風の別荘で２０名ぐらいで（タヒチ、日本、ハワイの人）音楽を弾いたり、ダンスを練習したり、料理したり、遊んだりして暮らしました。タヒチのバンド、Te Maire Rauriiと小松のTiare Heipuaのダンサーと一緒でした。このキャンプを主催したのは私のダンスの先生、Tiare Heipua Japanのリーダー、ヘイカプア。今年、Myth of Japan 日本神話というタイトルで、タヒチアンダンスとドラムで日本の古事記の神話を語るショーを制作しました。そのショーは先週末三回出演しました。大成功でした。

練習、準備、出演、そして２０名のゲストのお世話でばたばたしましたが、別荘はすごく暖かい雰囲気でとても楽しい生活でした。ドラマーさんは毎日少し時間を作ってくれて、ドラムの基礎をやさしく教えてくれました。タヒチ語も少しづつ教えてもらい、そして、遠い島々についての話を朝まで聞いたりしました。最後に、これからの練習の刺激に、ドラマーさんから貴重なトエレドラムとバッチをもらいました。

フノルとタヒチのバンドはハンガリーのドロンブ（口金）とタヒチのドラムを合わせて音楽を作ってみたのもありました。

「来月タヒチで会いましょう」という言葉で別れるのは夢みたいでした。この心が広くて、友好的で、明るくて、勤勉な人たちとタヒチで再会するのをとても楽しみにしています。

私たちのプロジェクトの協力者の皆に何回も心からありがとうと言いたいです。私たちの仕事についてこれからも報告します。そして、タヒチから帰ってから（１２月8日）、最後の編集を初めます。注文の商品（ネックレース、布など）もその時作り始めたいと思います。もし、早めに必要な方がいれば、私までご連絡お願いします。

Dance 踊り

I have asked myself many times why do I need to dance? And every time I come up with a different answer.

It helps me find freedom in my body, reconnects me with my femininity, gives me the experience of a loving community with other women and teaches me about God, life and myself in a gentle and artistic way.

According to a Sufi saying

“God respects you when you work, but he loves you when you dance.”

私は、自分によく『何で踊っているのかな』と聞いています。

ダンスを通して、自分の体の中自由を見つけられます。そして、踊りは自分の女性らしさと繋げてくれます。その上、他の女性との一体感を経験できます。ダンスは神様、自分、そして人生について優しく、芸実的に教えてくれます。

あることわざによりますと

「仕事している時、神様が君のこと尊敬します。踊っているときは、神様が君のこと愛しています。」

Finally, after our first attempt to do the recordings for our film was blown away by a huge typhoon two weeks ago, this Sunday we were able to dance, film and watch a spectacular sunset at Cape Maeda. The dancers were beautiful and hardworking, thanks to all of you, especially to Akane, who did a whole afternoon of dancing six months pregnant. Also thanks to our teacher, the creator of the choreography. She flew in this weekend from Kanazawa to help us during the recording.

初めての試みが巨大な台風に飛ばされた後、日曜日は真栄田岬で踊りを撮影すると美しい夕日を見ることができました。ダンサーが優美でしたし、とても頑張りました。皆、ありがとう。特に茜に感謝。六ヶ月目の妊婦さんで午後ずっと踊りました。そして、、この振り付けを作ってくださった私たちの先生が金沢からわざわざきてくださいました。先生、ありがとうございました。

Rainbow Dance at Shuri Park 首里城での虹の踊り

Tuesday night we went to Shuri Castle Park with some friends, many lights and two big generators to record the choreography for the film. The moment I saw the big sun shining on the castle walls under the moonlight, I was breathless. It was a magical night. And it would have been possible without Brandon, Buck and Camila. They did a great job in controlling the lights. Thank you so much!

火曜日の夜、首里城公園にダンスを撮影しに行って来ました。フノル、私と友達三人プラス照明五台と発電機二台で。月の下で首里城の壁に映った大きい太陽の絵を見た瞬間、とても感動しました。魅力的な夜でした。そして、ブランドン（ハワイイ）、バック（アメリカ）とカミラ（アルゼンチン）、三人の友達の手伝いがなければできなかったです。どうもありがとう！

FUNDRAISING EVENT SEPT 22 募金イベント ９月２２日

We are planning an event with Tahitian dancing&drumming, belly dancing and live music to raise funds for finishing our project.
このプロジェクトの募金のため、タヒチアンドラム、ダンス、ベリーダンス＆ライブ音楽のイベントを計画しています。

The event will be at Rooftop Terrace RIZE, 1min walk from Makishi station, on the 6th floor with a splendid view of Naha. The event starts at 6pm, so as not to miss the sunset from the rooftop.
場所は、イベントスペース ライズ、モノレールの牧志駅から歩いて１分。6階にありますので、那覇の夜景が楽しめます。夕日が見れるように、イベントは6時にスタートします。

We are planning to show parts of the Under the Same Sun movie and introduce the project briefly.
「同じ太陽のもとに」ドキュメンタリーの一部上映しながら、プロジェクトを紹介します。

The members of Tiare Heipua Okinawa will be performing Tahitian Dance, the choreography of the project in Okinawan Bingata Costumes as well!
Tiare Heipua Okinawaのメンバーによるタヒチアンダンスショーが見れます。その中に、プロジェクトで使われている曲と振り付けも踊ります。

Ryukyu Belly Dance Troupe will perform as well.

Brandon Ing (who arranged the music of our movie) will be playing guitar for the night. He will be performing his own songs, covers and we are planning to play some international songs too with GAijiN.

ブランドン イング（ハワイイ出身、ドキュメンタリーの音楽を作ってくれたアーティスト）がライブパフォーマンスをします。オリジナル＆カバーソングもあります。ギター＆ボーカルです。そして、GaijiNと一緒にハンガリーの曲も紹介します。

 

There is a bar for drinks and we will be selling a Hungarian speciality: trumpet bread! 

飲食はバー＆ハンガリー料理です。ハンガリーの名物お菓子、トランペットパンも準備します。

We will be selling artwork too, accessories, woodcarvings, photo prints, paintings - so it might be a good chance to get an original piece!

手作りもの、アクセサリ、木彫、写真などの販売も行いますので、オリジナルピースをゲットするチャンスです！

We are planning to have a DJ party with world music after the performances, so hopefully we will have the party going on all night!

Mountain, Ocean and Pearls 山、海と真珠

The symbols of the project have been inspired by a beautiful Hungarian folk song, Rainbow Mountain.

Rainbow Mountain

Lily grown on Rainbow Mountain

Does not like its old place, wants to hide and wander.

She should be moved, put into a new place,

She should be moved, maybe she shall grow there.

I would do anything for my father and mother,

Scoop all the water of the sea

Gather pearls from the bottom of the ocean

Make a pearl girdle for my lover.

It is very rare that we have the ocean and the sea mentioned in our folk songs, since Hungary lies far away from the ocean. The country had a coast in the past centuries, but the sea is not a widely used symbol in our folk tradition.


For me, in this song rainbow mountain symbolizes my home, Hungary.
The ocean is Okinawa,
and the pearls stand for Tahiti.

The complicated feelings of respect for one's home and roots, love for one's family, but restlessness of still wandering away are beautifully depicted in this song. These feelings are mine.

My grandparents and Hunor's (the cameraman) grandfather passed away during the four years we have been in Okinawa. With this work we would like to remember them and thank them for teaching us, loving us, giving us roots and a home.

ハンガリーの民謡で海をテーマにする歌はとても珍しいです。ハンガリーは海洋から遠くて、今は海岸もないです。昔、海岸画ありましたが、なかなかシンボルとしては使われていませんでしたので、この歌は独特です。

私にとっては

虹の山は母国、ハンガリーの象徴となります。

海は沖縄、

そして、真珠はタヒチのシンボルです。

複雑な気持ち：母国、自分の根と遺産の尊敬、家族への愛、そして、旅したい心はこの歌で美しく描かれています。これは、私の今の気持ちです。

私の祖父母とフノル（カメラマン）の祖父が私たちが沖縄にいる四年間の間、亡くなりました。今のプロジェクトで私たちを愛をこめて養ってくださった祖父母への感謝を表したいです。

(English video above) This is a short video we made right after we came back from Moldva, Romania. We have spent a week of homestay with a wonderful host in the village of Magyarfalu (Arini). I was amazed by the way these women sing.

We were planning to shoot our video of the choreography this Sunday. The weather had other plans...
We still went to the site and i was determined to dance in spite of the typhoon, but it was too hard of a challenge.

日曜日は真栄田岬でダンスの振り付けのビデオを取る予定でした、しかし、天気は別の予定がありました〜。どうしても、岬に行って、ダンスをやろうとしましたけど、やっぱり台風では踊りづらいですヨネ。

Dancing at Cape Maeda

Sunday afternoon some of the Tiare Heipua Okinawa girls went to Cape Maeda to rehearse for the video shooting of the Tahitian dance choreography for Under The Same Sun. We did some snorkeling, dancing and watched a spectacular sunset.

It is a bit hard to dance there barefoot but the location is worth!

日曜日の午後、ティアレヘイプア 沖縄のダンサーが真栄田岬にハンガリー民謡の振り付けを練習しに行きました。シュノーケリングも、ダンスもしましたし、そして、すごくきれいな夕日が見れました。

地面が裸足で少し踊りにくいけど、場所がすばらしいので我慢する〜
